Gathering indigenous knowledge

Our task is to gather all types of indigenous knowledge orally and post it to our blog. At the end of the project we will get help to transcribe the audio information to text and publish a book with the audio included on a DVD.

The task started at 8 November 2008 and the first part or our task end at the end of May 2009.

The second part of our task, to publish the information, must be in progress before the task is officially ended at 30 June 2009.

Our Vision:

To capture indigenous oral information such as history, stories, life experiences and poetry

Our Mission:

  1. The information will be gathered in oral (audio) format by group members, and posted on our blog
  2. We will use Voice Recorders for the recording.
  3. Each contributor must sign an agreement that the information is authentic and that we may use their stories etc. for publishing online as well as in the form of a book
  4. The abovementioned agreement should be signed before we may start recording
  5. We will concentrate on gathering original stories, poems, life experiences and information
  6. All the audio information will be posted to this blog
  7. At the end of May 2008 term the team must have gathered enough information to publish the transcribed audio information in text for publishing in print
  8. We will get the help of sponsors to reach our goals
Moral issues:
  • No damaging speech or words that can be offensive will be allowed
  • We will concentrate on "traditional" and "self created"
  • No one will gain any money out of, or from this project - this is a project by librarians to contribute to the South African indigenous knowledge by capturing some of our rich traditional knowledge that would otherwise be accessibile to only a handful of people

Our experiment

Goodday to my "family" members. Our blog does not look like anything special now as I created it during the course on Friday BUT once back in office I will definitely include your PPT introductions for a starter.

We will discuss the theme of our project later today (Friday 7 November, 2008) and I think it will be interesting to follow our progress through the coming year until the final completion date - 30 June 2009.
